Snippets of summer

Since my younger brother was born with cerebral palsy, my mother was glad to have Bill and I gone for awhile in the summers so she had more time to spend with Rick.

Rick was unable to walk until he was 5. He had numerous surgeries on his legs to improve his mobility.

I often went to Stevens Point to spend time with the Vicker side of the family. My grandparents had a cottage on Lake Emily, so for about two weeks each summer I would stay with them.

The Wellers from Chicago had the cottage next door and Richard and I got to be close. Yeah, he carved our initials on the seat of a swing in the park. Corny, huh?

I remember a time when we found (I should say took) some cigarettes and my grandpa saw us smoking and coughing. Well, he made us smoke all the cigarettes in the pack at once. We didn't do that again for a while.

We had a group of kids we hung around with and we often took the rowboat out to go over to the public beach.

My grandfather was a conductor on the Soo Line railroad. He once took me on a short ride in the caboose, it was fun, but I remember it didn't smell so good, the exhaust from the engine made me sick to my stomach.

When grandfather died and the Wellers got divorced, going to the cottage wasn't so much fun anymore.
